Police on Thursday announced they’ve arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the shooting death of Grant High School student Jaulon “JJ” Clavo, who was killed in November of last year while driving himself and some friends to their Del Paso Heights campus prior to a varsity playoff football game.

The suspect has actually been in juvenile hall custody since November 14, 2015, one day after the shooting, but was reportedly apprehended in connection to an unrelated incident on a gun possession charge.

SN&R is not naming the juvenile suspect, whom the Sacramento Police Department identified in a February 18 release announcing the break in the case.

The release credited the public for providing the information that “ultimately led to the identification” of the person authorities believe opened fire on the compact sedan, fatally wounding Clavo, 17, and injuring one of his passengers, Malik Johnson, who has since recovered.

“The motive behind the homicide is still unknown,” the release states.

In a statement, the Twin Rivers Unified School District said the arrest of the juvenile suspect “has brought some measure of solace to all of us in Twin Rivers.”

The statement continued:

We are relieved that someone has been arrested for this senseless tragedy. Our grief since that horrendous day has extended well beyond Twin Rivers Unified School District, and we appreciate the outpouring of love and support from around the region for the Clavo family and all of us in Twin Rivers.

While our hearts are still heavy, it’s comforting to know that the Clavo family and our community can now begin the healing process with the news that a suspect has been arrested and will face charges.

Senseless gun violence has plagued our area far too long. With today’s arrest, we are one step closer to a safer community for all.
