First look: Inside the Art Hotel

It still smells like paint inside the Jade Apartments.

The previously abandoned building has been transformed into Sacramento’s biggest and most ambitious temporary art gallery, the Art Hotel. A total of 130 artists worked on the project at 7th and L Streets, and some foundations submitted additional legacy work. For more context, check out this week’s SN&R.

It opens to the public today. Entrance is free, and there will be tours, special live performances, film screenings and other programming until its closure on February 13. Click here for the full schedule. If you stop by during the day, organizers recommend returning at night for a whole different vibe.

Among the work to admire: a 45-minute sonic history lesson of the building, one mile of zipper that culminates in a working swing and a half-pipe, as well as inspiring bathrooms, enormous sculptures and interactive installations. Here’s just a sample:
