Barbershops serving booze with haircuts protected under new bill

Photo by Steven CheaWhen it’s time to return to Jimmy’s Barber Garage—or Barber Blues, or Anthony’s Barbershop, etc.—what do you most look forward to? That sweet, old fashioned neck shave? Or that free beer?

Booze and haircuts have operated hand-in-hand in Sacramento’s hippest shops for the past few years. If you have to wait in line, you help yourself to a cold one. But is the gesture even legal?

Assemblymember Tom Daly introduced a bill today that would officially allow barbershops and beauty salons to serve alcoholic beverages, as long as there’s no charge for the drinks. AB 1322 would place salons in the same category as limousine and hot air balloon services, with no license or permit necessary from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Cheers to that, and all future poor hairstyle decisions.
