It’s time for offering a nod to all things mischievous and nocturnal. Whether its costume balls and horror screenings in the bloody heart of Sacramento, or music events and cornstalk-wandering from Woodland to Wheatland, Sacramento is a dismembered piece of California’s rotting corps that still has plenty of appendages reaching for this year’s sinister season.

Doom Birdie Bash, a Mahaloween party at The Jungle Bird – All Night

“Our 999 Happy Birdies are excited to welcome all you foolish mortals to our Mahaloween Party!” is the warning that’s been put out by Sacramento’s only genuine tiki bar. The Jungle Bird’s team says that it will be “conjuring spirited cocktail creations inspired by the Haunted Mansion that are sure to send shivers down your spine.” This days-long drink event starts on Friday, Oct. 27 and runs through Halloween night. The Jungle Bird is located at 2516 J Street in Sacramento.

All-aboard Father Paddy’s Pirate Pub in Woodland – 7 p.m.  

The Irishwoman Grace O’Mally was History’s greatest female pirate – a ship-jacking, Queen-defying, sheriff-dodging rebel of ‘the Land of Blood and Horses.’ This fall, Father Paddy’s Pub in Woodland is offering a chance to honor her and every other buccaneer of the High Seas with its pirate-themed Halloween party on Oct. 28. The event involves having a century-old bank transformed into a shadowy pirate’s pub of the dead. Costumes, especially pirates, are encouraged. There will be a contest for best outfit and live music from The Retrospects. Father Paddy’s Pub is located at 435 Main Street in Woodland.

Shannon McCabe’s Annual Vampire Ball at Harlow’s in Sacramento – 7 p.m.

The Capital’s Queen of the Night is returning this year with another fang-filled extravaganza. Shannon McCabe, Sacramento’s celeb goth-extraordinaire, has a lot planned for her latest tribute to immortal wandering: The evening includes live performances from A Death in Bloom and Dabby Long Legs, as well as music by D.J. Bryan Hawk. There will also be a burlesque performance from Sugar Cheeks, and a fire-star performance from Starlet O’Hara. Another way that attendees can get their goth on is by drinking the ball’s vampire-themed cocktail, “The Blood Bath,” a mix of Chambord, Cabernet wine and cranberry juice. Additional special cocktails for the event are ‘The True Blood’ and ‘The Fang-banger.’ The event includes a secret lounge, VIP access and more. More Nites like this: Rhythm and & Boo – 10 p.m.

Midway Bar in West Sacramento presents an evening of costumed music and dancing to give everyone full moon fever. The event includes several DJs spinning hip-hop, afrobeat, pop and R&B as guests roam through what the venue promises to be “a spine-chilling atmosphere with haunting decorations, eerie lighting, and a bone-chilling ambiance.” The night includes a costume contest with prizes. Doors open at 10 p.m. Midway is located at 330 3^rd Street, West Sacramento.  

Haunted Monster Hotel – 9 p.m.

Held in Sheraton Grand Ballroom, this ghoulish gala is hoping to be one of the most-stylish Halloween parties that Sacramento has seen in years. It includes multiple bars, a ballroom dance floor and Forrier No-Cal’s Best Top 40 open format DJs. It will also feature state of the art sound and LED lighting systems, complimentary party favors and a VIP section with giant tables. All costumes are welcome. This is a 21-and-over party. Screening of ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ at Downtown’s Crest Theatre – 7 p.m.

This 1975 cult film about an innocent couple wandering through a strange castle, only to behold a mad scientist’s plot to create new life, has become a staple in the edgier side of annual Halloween entertainment. With one memorable musical number after another, “Rocky Horror Picture” immortalized the talent of Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Richard O’Brien and Meat Loaf. This year, on the eve of Halloween, Sacramentans can watch the film inside a theater as grand and glitzy as the over-the-top-energy that comes to mind whenever the chorus of ‘Let’s do the time warp again!’ rings out. Corn maze at Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Featuring both a two-acre corn maze and seven-acre corn maze, Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm in Wheatland has plenty of twisting turns to get lost in. This is a family-friend Halloween attraction, with the smaller maze especially appropriate for younger children to venture through. The mazes are positioned near a sprawling pumpkin patch that’s evocative of the Halloween season, especially when sun sets on the surrounding fields. Screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ at Sacramento’s historic Tower Theatre – 7 p.m.

Alfred Hitchcock’s groundbreaking horror masterpiece ‘Psycho,’ written by Joseph Stefano – and starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh – will play Halloween night inside a lauded theater whose marquee was lit when the film first premiered. The high-mark of Hitchcock’s later career, “Psycho” is the story of a frustrated secretary who steals a large sum of money in a moment of weakness. On the run in the dusty valleys of California, she takes refuge at an aging, roadside motel, where her hosts are a lonely young man and his shadowy, malevolent mother. Tickets can be purchased here.
