The gloves are off! Controversial food safety law repealed

Bare hands were sighted all over Kru Restaurant—and its sushi—last night.

The chefs had been wearing latex in preparation for the new “glove law,” which quietly went into effect on Jan. 1. Enforcement was going to start today.

But over the weekend, Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB2130, which repeals the whole thing.

Assemblyman Richard Pan introduced the appeal—and the original ban—in February after hearing backlash from local chefs, bartenders and others in the food industry.

The big takeaway: watching a sushi chef slice a big hunk of raw tuna, or a bartender prepare a lemon twist on a craft cocktail, will continue to be a latex-free experience. Enjoy.
