It’s been no secret around town that Mike Farrell, the damn near-iconic local Sacramento musician, has spent his adulthood battling drug addiction. He’ll be the first to talk openly about it.

Recently he went to rehab again, an experience he documented candidly on Facebook–and there he spent time with another local musician, Jeffrey Valentine.

In addition to receiving treatment, Farrell and Valentine started making music together and when they got out the pair formed a band with MIke Cordano from the Snobs.

Valentine, formerly of Panda Bear Greens and Helper Monkeys, recently sent me a link to some of the band’s new songs “Powder Blues / Cocaine,” recorded earlier this month during a recent show.

The band is currently working on a record but you can check them out before then, next Thursday May 15 at Harlow’s Nightclub & Restaurant (2708 J Street) with B&B Music Factory. Show starts at 10 p.m. and costs $7 at the door. 

Back to the songs, however: I dig them for their bluesy, garage-y sound. They’re super raw and energetic and if they’re any hint of what’s to come on the record then sign me up. Oh, and heads up, planners, there’s another gig on the books, Sunday, May 25 at the Blue Lamp (1400 Alhambra Blvd.) with the Alex Vincent Band. That show starts at 9 p.m. and is also $7 at the door.
