“I use a lot of detail, a lot of colors, and incorporate a lot of different parts of my life. I work from family photos, usually.” John S. Huerta holding a print of his work Carmen Maria. (Photo by Cody Drabble)

Page Burner stopped by John S. Huerta’s table outside of the MARRS Building on 20th Street to check out his paintings and discuss his influences. Huerta paints Dia De Los Muertos-inspired portraits of women from his personal life as well as celebrity icons. His art hangs in local restaurants like Azúl Mexican Food and Tequila Bar and Mayahuel’s Tequila Bar. Huerta will be featured at an upcoming show in September at the California Museum.
Huerta incorporated the Dia De Los Muertos influence after a difficult personal loss. “Well, I started with the passing of my sister and mother, so many years ago, ten months apart,” Huerta said. “It was my outlet to try to understand death.”

“I incorporated the butterfly because that signifies rebirth, as well as using the vibrant colors. This was my outlet – tying it in with the Hollywood icons and Dia De Los Muertos as well.”
