Graphic photos of a severely scalded German shepherd located in Sacramento last month circulated through Facebook this week, inspiring mass condemnation and the offer of reward money to find the person or persons responsible.
Photos of the animal were first shared Tuesday on the Facebook page belonging to the Front Street Animal Shelter, where the dog was brought after a bystander spotted her chasing a car on Power Inn Road across the street from Danny Nunn Park the night of April 25. According to Front Street’s post, the bystander was able to catch the female German shepherd and hold onto her until Animal Care Services officers arrived to take custody. Severe second- and third-degree burns left an open, red blister along most of the dog’s back. The dog is receiving extensive veterinary care for her injuries, a PETA news release states.
PETA has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.
“It takes a dangerous lack of empathy to horrifically burn a dog and then leave her for dead, suffering alone and in agony,” PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien said in the release. “PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately, before this culprit hurts anyone else.”
Information, as well as anonymous tips, can be provided by calling Chief Animal Control Officer Jace Huggins at (916) 808-5855.
As of Friday afternoon, Front Street’s Facebook post had garnered 2,000 impressions and been shared more than 2,700 times.
