On Aug. 22, the city in Sacramento County known for hosting the area’s biggest rodeo will also welcome a performer from a town known for producing the best songwriters in Texas.
Dallas Burrow hails from New Braunfels, where he grew up a stone’s throw from Gruene Hall, the most famed historic country music venue in the Lone Star State. Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, George Strait, Lucinda Williams and Ryan Bingham all launched their early careers playing at the 146-year-old central Texas honky tonk. Burrow himself will be slamming guitar chords there next month.
Legendary songwriter Townes Van Zandt also took the stage at Gruene Hall, and ultimately got to know Borrow, through his dad, when the latter was young. Given that upbringing, it is not surprising that Burrow says he’s always had “music in his blood.”
Now, Burrow is bringing that passion to the perfect venue near Folsom’s rodeo arena.
The 12-year music veteran is on tour ahead of his upcoming release The Way the West Was Won. Burrow’s new record has been described as “a richly imaginative collection of cowboy songs, conjuring up a Wild West landscape of vaqueros and outlaws,” as well as simply “a love letter to Texas itself.”
The Way the West Was Won was produced by Grammy winner Lloyd Maines and features guest appearances from Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kelly Willis and Jim Lauderdale. The unmistakable influence of Townes Van Zandt in some of is rough-rider songs also has fans excited.
Burrow will be plugging his guitar in at the Folsom Hotel, a landmark on Sutter Street dating back to 1885. The building got a major renovation several years ago and has been returned to the glory of its gold panning days. With its western Victorian ceiling tins and walls decked in ornate saloon paper, the space is a clutter of ram heads, elk racks and mounted Winchester rifles, all centered around beer taps running through a massive pair of steer horns. It’s an ideal setting for Burrow to take California listeners on sonic journey through his home state. Tickets to the show are $21 and can be purchased here. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the music starting at 7 p.m. The Folsom Hotel is located at 703 Sutter Street in Folsom’s historic quarter.
