Dumb hole: ‘The Gorge’ has a strong premise—destroyed by an idiotic reveal

By Bob Grimm

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy must protect the world from evil forces dwelling in a giant chasm in The Gorge, a film that will surely stand as one of 2025’s dumbest.

The two play mercenaries stationed on opposite sides of this gorge, and there is a great sense of mystery as to what they are supposed to be keeping down in the hole. It turns out to be a bunch of creatures that look like sloppy versions of Groot.

The reveal is laughable. What was a promising premise—that the Gorge could actually be the gateway to hell—is wasted when the film becomes just another “experiment gone wrong” movie.

Teller and Taylor-Joy are dumped into a colossal, goofy mess. They have proven their mettle as action stars before, and they could make a magical screen couple—but this movie has no idea what to do with them.

In fact, this film has no idea in general. It’s just the kernel of a great idea that popped into a large, confusing clusterfuck. Two smitten secret-agent types tasked with guarding the world from Satan sounded cool, but that’s not what this movie is.

The lesson here: When you get a cool, dark, evil idea, don’t turn it into a wannabe love story/dopey science-fiction yarn that wastes excellent star power.

The Gorge is now streaming on Apple TV+.
