Sudwerk among local winners at Great American Beer Festival

Five Sacramento region breweries took home honors from this past weekend’s Great American Beer Festival, the country’s largest annual beer competition in Denver.

Locally, the biggest winner was Sudwerk Brewing Co. out of Davis, which earned gold for its Funke Hop Farm in the mixed-culture brett category. Sudwerk’s Farmers Market Citrus Gose also took bronze for German-style sour. Mraz Brewing gets a lot of hype locally for its ambitious sours and barrel-aged beers, but clearly there’s another force across the Causeway that deserves more recognition.

The only Sacramento-proper brewery awarded was Rubicon: its 2007 Winter Wheatwine won bronze in the aged beer category.

Auburn cleaned up three awards between three breweries. Auburn Alehouse’s Old Town Brown got bronze for the English-style mild ale; Knee Deep Brewing Co.'s Breaking Bud also took bronze for American-style IPA; and newcomer Moonraker Brewing Co. won silver in the blonde ale category for Miss Conduct.
