Unidentified man killed, officer wounded in altercation on Del Paso Boulevard

An unidentified black man was killed by police after an altercation that left one law-enforcement officer wounded on Del Paso Boulevard this morning at about 9:30 a.m.

The man was acting erratically in the area of Lochbrae Road, tossing a knife into the air while shouting obscenities, according to neighbors who called police and then witnessed the officer firing on the man. After throwing the knife for a few moments, neighborhood residents say that they saw him soil himself and then brandish a handgun.

“He wanted the police to come,” said Melissa Gudis, one of the local residents who witnessed the shooting.

The man then left Lochbrae Road, wandering onto Del Paso Boulevard and spending some time in the lobby of Sacramento News & Review, where, according to witnesses, he acted erratically before heading out onto the street. There, officers began following him in their vehicles while using megaphones to issue commands for him to surrender.

According to witnesses, he began shouting at the officers, throwing a metal bottle at one of their vehicles. After multiple vehicles and officers on foot cornered him near the Stoney Inn, a bar on Del Paso Boulevard, that’s about when shots rang out.

Law-enforcement officers at the scene declined to comment, but multiple reports indicate that an officer was injured during the altercation that led to shots being fired.

The man and the wounded officer were taken away by ambulance for treatment. FOX40 and other news outlets have since reported that the man has died.

A call to a public-information officer with the Sacramento Police Department went unanswered. We’ll update as more information becomes available.
