Carla Meyer named Sacramento Bee's new restaurant critic

Sacramento Bee readers have been waiting since March to hear who would replace Blair Anthony Robertson as restaurant critic. Last night, Carla Meyer announced she’s assuming that role on Twitter.

Now that it’s out there, Meyer does seem like the logical choice. She has years of reviewing experience as the Bee’s film critic, yet at the same time, movie reviews are easy things for the Bee to print from the San Francisco Chronicle and other sources. That can’t be done with local restaurants. Meyer also used to write quite a bit of music features for the Bee, and that role was recently transferred to former food and wine writer Chris Macias.

Macias also noted in a Facebook post last night that Meyer, unlike the Bee’s last food critic, actually has restaurant experience in both the back and front of the house.

The Bee may follow in line with the likes of New York Magazine and not attempt to make Meyer an anonymous figure, because, well, we all already know what she looks like. I’ll also throw out there that female food critics are pretty rare… for a variety of suspected reasons.

Look for Meyer’s first reviews in the coming weeks.
