Iron Horse Tavern, R Street development get grand opening date

The new mixed-use building at R and 15th Streets is holding a grand opening party on Sunday, June 14. A $25 ticket will get you appetizers and other small bites from the building’s three restaurants—Iron Horse Tavern, Dos Coyotes Border Cafe and Roxie Deli Barbecue—as well as live music and other festivities.

Roxie has been open for a while, but the party finally gives us a date for the other restaurants. Iron Horse Tavern is the latest concept from the Wong family, who also own Cafeteria 15L, Firestone Public House and a few other spots downtown.

The cuisine? “Creative American,” according to Mason Wong.

“We’ve been able to travel to a lot of cities and get ideas,” he said. “Our menu is going to be pretty unique, pretty different.”

He wouldn’t elaborate too much more beyond that, but he did say there will be pizza—a thinner crust than his offerings at Firestone—and breakfast every day of the week. The beverage program will boast a lot of craft cocktails, whiskeys and 20 beers on tap. Price point should be similar to Cafeteria 15L. Wong said he’s especially excited for the design, which is supposed to resemble a European tavern of sorts.

“It’s going to look pretty amazing—very cozy, comfortable inside, but still have an edge to it,” he said. “There’s not a lot of that happening in Sacramento right now.”
