Planet V: Restless for restaurants

It’s possible that in the next few days, you may be able to visit your favorite Sacramento restaurant again. Then again, maybe not.

While Sacramento is poised to enter Stage 2 of statewide COVID-19 regulations, dining rooms could only reopen under very specific conditions that include social distancing, and not every restaurant can meet those guidelines.

Despite vegan restaurants being a fairly small niche, some eateries have stayed open and thrived during the pandemic. Burger Patch told SN&R in an interview last month that it hired additional staff. New kid on the East Sac block Pure Soul Plant-Based Eats, with its small retail space, relied on its take-out menu from the start.

Still, some of my favorite vegan food in town is served by omni-restaurants that remain closed entirely, or are offering abbreviated to-go menus and have yet to make announcements about reopening or expanding services.

But when a restaurant’s layout doesn’t allow for proper distancing, its owners are concerned about staff health and safety, or its finances just don’t allow it, you may not be seated in a favorite dining room any time soon. And there are people like me who believe the reopening is coming too soon.

So to Kasbah and its vegan gyro: I miss you. To Pushkin’s scrambled tofu: I miss you. To Simpleton, where waffles were vegan by default: I miss you too. I hope to see you all again soon. Not now, but soon.
