The Mountain Mandarin Festival is a November destination, held annually the week-end before Thanksgiving. The Festival celebrates the harvest of locally grown Owari Satsuma Mandarin oranges. The Mandarin orange is truly a citrus experience! This very unique Placer County harvest has recently made headlines with USDA supported information regarding the substantial health benefits associated with this delicious fruit.

For the pleasure of the attendees, there are three stages of live entertainment; hundreds of quality crafters; a cooking stage with demonstrations by professional Chef's; a very competitive recipe contest with substantial prizes; an area devoted to children's activities; and fifteen local citrus farmers selling their freshly harvested Mandarin oranges. This year there will be a new dynamic Kaleidoscope Exhibit.

The food offered at the Festival is carefully selected. Each food vendor is required to have one item on the menu that includes Mandarin oranges. Last year, a recipe for Mandarin orange gelato was developed especially for the Festival. You'll find Mandarin orange flavored pistachios and almonds; pulled pork and sausages; coffee, smoothies and adult beverages; a variety of sauces, syrups, jams, jellies and marmalade; infused olive oil; and chocolate dipped Mandarin oranges!

The quality and innovation of the Mountain Mandarin Festival has received state-wide recognition. Proceeds from the Festival fund three scholarships presented each year by the Newcastle Area Business Association. Crowds have grown from 1,500 in 1993 to 40,000 in 2008. Actor's Workshop of Sacramento presents "The Spoon River Anthology" by Edgar Lee Masters, Friday November 13 through Sunday November 29, 2009. Performances are 8pm Fridays and Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays at Wilkerson Theatre, 25th & R Streets in Sacramento, Ca. The production is directed by Ed Claudio.

The play is a dramatic adaptation of Edgar Lee Masters' 1915 anthology of poems about life in the fictional small town of Spoon River. The book features over 200 characters reflecting from beyond the grave about their lives, and the play uses 60 of those epitaphs as the foundation for monologues and original songs.

The Actor's Workshop was founded in 1989 by Edward Claudio and Michelle Barnett as a place for actors of all levels of experience to develop their craft.

The Actor's Workshop Theatre has staged more than 200 plays, including plays by Shakespeare (Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, A Midsummer Night's Dream), Henrik Ibsen (Hedda Gabler - "Four Stars" from the Sacramento Bee), Anton Chekhov (Three Sisters, The Seagull), Edward Albee (The Zoo Story, A Delicate Balance, Finding the Sun), Tennessee Williams (Sun and Smoke, I Can't Imagine Tomorrow), Eugene O'Neill (Long Day's Journey Into Night, Hughie), Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman), and John Steinbeck (Of Mice and Men). In addition to the classics, the theater stages modern plays, including productions of Brian Friel's Dancing at Lughnasa, Michael Weller's Loose Ends, and Athol Fugard's Valley Song ("Four Stars" from the Sacramento Bee), and has given full-scale productions to more than a dozen new works by local playwrights. For more than a decade, the Actor's Workshop Theater has also produced annual one-act play festivals, teen shows, and children's shows.

Casting Director Tips To Get The Job

1. Be prepared. Know your craft. Auditions are your way to market your skills and demonstrate your value to the entertainment industry.

2. Be professional and courteous - to everyone- from the security guard at the front gate of the studio to the receptionist to the casting director, and everyone in the audition room. A performer’s personal behavior speaks volumes. Talent is hired on 3 things, your look. talent and your professionalism.

3. Be punctual. Casting takes place in a fast-paced environment and casting directors appreciate consideration of their time and schedules. Don’t waste their time! Be personable and responsive, but don’t talk too much or overstay your welcome.

4. Headshots and resumes. Make sure your headshot looks like you. Airbrush all you want, but you better look like just like your photo when you walk into that room. Always have extra headshots and resumes on hand at every audition.

5. Presentation. Make sure you can be seen and heard. Position yourself so that your face is visible (also, keep long hair out of your face). If you can’t be seen or heard, your performance is lost. Dressing for a role is fine, but don’t wear a costume. Wear something that suggests the character or the profession and let your performance do the rest.

6. Do your homework. Know who you are auditioning for. By researching the director, casting director, producer and show, you may find connections to other people or projects, and learn about the style or genre of a project or its creators.

7. Don’t let anything throw you. You have a right to be there, you were invited there to audition. When other performers enter the waiting room and don’t look like you, think about yourself as “the other way to go.” Often the casting process is about exploring various ways to go with a character, so stay confident and show them how you would do the role. If you’re asked to read another role or make an adjustment, take a moment, and then do your best to do what is asked of you.

8. Be gracious and receptive. Be open to direction. Don’t challenge, make excuses or try to explain yourself. Stay open and easy to direct. Casting directors may want to see if you can take direction.

9. No chit chat. They don’t want to hear about the traffic, or how your day is going. Put yourself in their position. They will meet 15-50 performers auditioning in one day. Would you want to hear 50 excuses on why you were late? Go in. Do your best work. Get out. Leave them wanting more instead of having overdosed on you.

9. Auditions, like scenes, have a beginning, middle, and an end. Walk in confidently, take charge of how you want to work, do your job and get out of the room (always leave them wanting more). Once you have left the audition, let it go. You can have a great audition and still not get the job. They just went another way.

10. Casting directors remember good work. Follow all of these steps and you will be called back by the casting director. It may be for that part or it may happen five years down the line. Each successful audition is like money in the bank. Show yourself in the best light possible by being prepared, professional and positive.

If you're looking Power Yoga style adventures join us Monday and Wednesday nights at 6 pm at East Sac Yoga. In these mixed levels classes we do different poses each week with the poses linked with vinyasas into flowing sequences. These classes explore a wide variety of poses drawn from the Ashtanga First through Fourth Series. Great for building endurance, meditative focus and upper body strength.

Friday nights at 6 pm we do traditional Ashtanga. Full First Series every week except the 2nd Friday of the month when it's a Second Series practice. These are led classes so you don't need to know the series -- we guide you through all the fun.

If you're new to yoga or just looking for a more moderately paced class, join us for a Classical Hatha Yoga class Tuesdays or Thursdays at 6 pm at East Sac Yoga. In these classes we explore a wide variety of poses as well as the breathwork and meditative techniques of traditional yoga practice.

Classical Hatha Yoga

A fun hatha yoga class for all levels. Come once a week or more often--we're doing a different selection of poses each class. We offer lots of attention to alignment and form in the poses as well as modifications of the more challenging aspects for beginners. But this class also offers such a wide variety of poses that experienced students will also be challenged.


Mondays and Wednesdays 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Power Yoga

A challenging mix of poses linked with fluid connecting movements (vinyasa) to build strength, endurance and meditative focus. This breath-centered practice explores an ever changing selection of poses drawn from Ashtanga 1st through 4th series including lots of backbends, inversions, arm balances and more. A fun time for all levels--but come expecting a serious workout.

If you're new to Ashtanga style practice, we offer lots of modifications and preparatory work for the more challenging poses.



Fridays 6:00 - 7:45 pm [except the 2nd Friday of the month]

Ashtanga >> first series

Explore the breathwork, alignment and flow of this vigorous, transformative practice. The First Series (also known as the Ashtanga Primary Series) is a fast paced flow of 70 poses as taught by Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

All levels are welcome. We guide you through the practice offering modifications for the more challenging poses. Watch your practice deepen over time. We focus on breath, flow and having a good time.



Fridays 6:00 - 7:45 pm [once a month -- on the 2nd Friday]

Ashtanga >> second series

Not necessarily harder than Ashtanga First Series, just a different mix of poses. It starts and ends the same but in the middle of the practice there are different backbends, inversions, twists and more.

If you've done some (or a lot) of Ashtanga First Series this class will take your practice to the next level. But you don't need to be an Ashtanga veteran to join us -- all levels welcome, but it's a serious workout
